Behind the Scenes with Our Chief Mechanic

Here at Exit5 Auto Group, we don’t just sell cars — we service them too. We have a 7,000 square foot service area where experienced professionals work on all types of cars, from the classics to the daily drivers. Leading the team is Chief Mechanic Danny Gitto, who has plenty of experience with vehicles. In fact, being a mechanic runs in his family. “I got into the business by handing my father wrenches when I was 8 years old,” said Gitto with a laugh. “It’s a good possibility it’s in my blood.”

When Gitto was 13, his dad bought a 1940 Chrysler as a major project for father and son to tackle together. “We actually took the motor out and rebuilt it, as well as the transmission and the rear end,” Gitto explained. “He guided me through that. On my 16th birthday it was all set, and he handed me the keys.”

Gitto even worked as a mechanic in his native Argentina, helping at his uncle’s shop after graduating from high school and then running his own shop for five years. He also raced cars both there and in the United States. In 1984, after his return to the Capital Region, he opened his own garage in East Greenbush, where he worked on all kinds of cars — from Fords to Ferraris.

We asked Gitto to join our team because of his incredible talent and experience, and he decided it was time to work for someone else after thirty years. You’ll find him out back, enjoying servicing cars as he has been doing since he was a child. “It’s a beautiful place to work,” said Gitto. “We have all the exotics, which I like, but I will service them all.”

Gitto also works on some cars before we sell them, if necessary. “If a car we are going to sell needs any repair work, it is always done,” Gitto said. “Once it’s out on the lot all it needs is a test drive and an owner. You can have full confidence in what you are getting here at Exit5 Auto Group.”
